Quicklime, also known as calcium oxide (CaO), is a chemical compound that is a white, caustic, and alkaline crystalline solid. It is a basic oxide and is commonly used in various industrial and chemical processes. Quicklime is produced by heating limestone (calcium carbonate, CaCO3) in a kiln to a high temperature, which drives off carbon dioxide (CO2) and leaves behind calcium oxide. The chemical reaction can be represented as:
